Can Diet Choices Cause Pimples? Or is it Genetics?

Dermatologist Professor George Varigos says food choices can be a trigger

It’s an old discussion that’s getting new attention: does chocolate and other processed foods really cause pimples?

Melbourne dermatologist Professor George Varigos says while genetic factors often play a part in breakout tendencies, food choices can also be a trigger; a relatively new way of thinking, considering many dermatologists once believed processed food and prevalence of pimples weren’t linked. However, research shows certain foods and drinks may cause acne in some individuals.

A 2002 study published in Archives of Dermatology presents strong evidence that certain foods can cause breakouts[4].

“There are common foods eaten by adolescents in our culture that can cause acne, including soft drinks, sugary snacks and white bread,” Professor Varigos says. “These foods can indirectly cause pimples because the metabolism changes in response to them and drives oiliness and dryness. This then encourages more oil, which then causes acne.”

“Over time, high insulin levels can make skin drier, thicker and flakes of dry skin block pores. It can also increase levels of free androgens (male hormones) in males and females, making the skin’s sebaceous glands produce more oil and hence triggering acne.”

If over-indulging in your favourite sweet treats has made your digestion and skin feel less than vibrant, there are positive steps you can take to combat spots, foster vibrancy and make the body’s largest organ feel better than ever.

Did You Know?

Adult acne is a skin condition that affects 35% and 50% of Australian women and men respectively[1], as well as 93.3% of teens aged between 16 and 18[2]. Acne sufferers in particular have been found to suffer from low self-esteem particularly as the condition continues or presents itself in adulthood, say researchers[3].
